We are delighted to announce that Helen Neville has been appointed a Deputy District Judge (DDJ) on the Northern Circuit.
Helen is a Partner in our Medical Negligence team who has specialised in this area of law since starting as a Paralegal back in 2005.
As DDJ, Helen will hear and decide cases and make important decisions in the administration of justice.
In fact, the job description actually states “the purpose of judicial office is to administer justice in accordance with the laws in England and Wales without fear or favour, affection or ill will”.
The role of a DDJ is the same as a District Judge, except it is a part-time role, which means Helen can serve in this role while continuing with her valuable work at Simpson Millar.
Helen is expecting to preside over a wide range of civil cases, including but not limited to personal injury matters, cases involving housing, landlord and tenant disputes, breach of contract, debt recovery and consumer rights.
Her activities will be conducted both in public and in private, in the judge’s hearing room or in chambers.
Some applications can be dealt with on paper and others may be handled remotely by telephone or a video conferencing platform. In her new role, Helen will also undertake work involving the preparation for trial, trial hearings and interlocutory applications.
