Being diagnosed with an industrial disease such as mesothelioma is hugely traumatic, both for the patient and their loved ones. Our specialist Industrial Disease Solicitors always consider how having a serious illness affects mental health. So if we take on your claim for compensation, we’ll work diligently to make sure your emotional as well as physical needs are met.

We have close links with many specialist counsellors, charities and organisations, so we can help you access the support you need and speak to people in similar situations. We always look at arranging specialist counselling where requested and holistic remedies such as reflexology, and make sure this is included in all our mesothelioma claims to avoid our clients having to pay.

Claiming compensation isn’t just about money. It’s about helping you and your family live with your condition - and addressing the emotional effects of mesothelioma is a crucial part of this.

Clients We Have Helped

Eve

Eve from Exmouth has been having bereavement counselling with Quiet Mind, after losing her partner and soulmate, David Palferman, to mesothelioma.

She said, “Helen Grady from Simpson Millar set this up for me recently and this has been an absolute lifeline. I can have as many sessions as I need, and I have been feeling so much better recently because of this.

“It is good to know that help is available and to have a Solicitor who cares enough to listen to my concerns and set it all up with a recommended counsellor, who herself lost a loved one through mesothelioma, has been such a huge help to me.”

Gary

Gary from Yeovil was diagnosed with mesothelioma and had 6 cycles of chemotherapy that caused a tingling sensation to his feet. He’s now having private immunotherapy treatment through a specialist oncologist from the Nuffield Hospital in Bristol.

He said, “The reflexology has been extremely useful and helped to relieve a lot of the tingling in my feet. As my wife has suffered with the difficulties of coming to terms with my diagnosis, she too has been having reflexology treatment and has found this to have a calming effect. This has helped us together to come to terms with our situation.”

What are the Mental Health Effects of Mesothelioma?

Uncertainty

Many people diagnosed with mesothelioma struggle with the uncertainty it causes, according to research by the University of Sheffield. For example, many worry about how long they have left to live and how quickly their cancer will progress. As a result, they worry about what the next day or month will bring, and wonder if they should look forward to future occasions and life events.

Trying to Cope with Difficult Feelings

A mesothelioma diagnosis can be very distressing to patients and leads to many being overwhelmed with negative feelings. In turn, many carers struggle to cope with the patient’s low moods, frustration and irritability.

Determination

Being told you have a fatal disease can sometimes have a positive psychological effect on patients. The University of Sheffield research highlighted several examples of people determined to enjoy each day and fulfil ambitions after getting their mesothelioma diagnosis, and not wanting to feel defeated by their illness.

Needing Good Communication

Patients and carers feel clear communication from healthcare providers is vital for their mental health. The University of Sheffield study found that some people feel being well-informed and up-to-date helps to ease their anxiety, while others value simply knowing they have someone available to help at the other end of the phone.
