Today is Action Mesothelioma Day, a national effort to raise awareness of this devastating asbestos-related illness.

Due to strict social distancing rules, the event has moved online for 2020, and our Industrial Disease Solicitors are proud to support this special day in these unusual circumstances.

If you’ve been affected by mesothelioma, we’d encourage you to join these online events, which include patients and clinical experts sharing their experiences and expertise virtually.

The talks start at 11am GMT and run for one hour. For more information on the event, take a look at the UK Mesothelioma Alliance’s Facebook or Twitter page.

What Action Mesothelioma Day 2020 Wants to Achieve

Action Mesothelioma Day 2020 is a UK-wide effort to raise awareness of mesothelioma and campaign for better research and treatment for those affected.

It’s also a chance for people with the condition, as well as their families and carers, to share their experiences of living with mesothelioma.

Finally, it’s an opportunity for the scientists working on clinical trials and healthcare practitioners to talk about the great work they do to help patients day after day.

By going virtual, Action Mesothelioma Day will continue to shine a light on the important issues facing people affected by this condition, even as the Covid-19 pandemic rages on.

Simpson Millar Supports Action Mesothelioma Day 2020

Gavin Evans, Partner and Industrial Disease Lawyer at Simpson Millar said, “It’s really important that we continue to raise the profile of this dreadful disease despite the restrictions imposed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Mesothelioma continues to claim far too many precious lives every year, despite the use of asbestos having been banned many years ago.

“The tragic death rate has a massive impact on so many families every year. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated the position for many sufferers, causing delays in consultations, diagnoses and treatment.

“The work of Mesothelioma UK and local asbestos charities such as Asbestos Awareness Support Cymru is absolutely crucial and we are proud to support such asbestos charities in striving to raise the profile of the devastating effects of asbestos on the lives of so many and in carrying out research into the condition and on possible new treatments.”

Helen Grady, Partner and Industrial Disease Solicitor added, “Being there for my clients has been more important than ever and hearing their stories of how they have been coping and being able to provide help and support where I can has been uplifting.

“I have been able to put many clients in touch with one another for telephone support and this has helped many, and to be able to see long-lasting beautiful friendships form has been truly inspirational.”

Of course, the lockdown has left many of us looking at our lives differently, and organisers of Action Mesothelioma Day events are no different.

Katrina Compton, who organises events in Somerset, lost her mother Doreen to mesothelioma 5 years ago, and has spent lockdown at home with her husband Jim and two children, 8-year-old Jay and Ella, 9.

“To have this long period of quality time with my family has been important for me, as I was diagnosed with melanoma, a skin cancer, not long after losing my mum and I take daily medication for this,” she commented.

“To be able to enjoy the garden and have a slow pace of life to take stock has been a good thing from this awful situation.”
