Family Lawyers Welcome Long Overdue End to Divorce Blame Game
Family Lawyers have today welcomed a ‘long overdue’ government announcement that will bring to an end the need to apportion blame during divorce proceedings in England and Wales.
Fiona Snowdon, Family Lawyer at Simpson Millar said, “In recent years we have seen an increase in the number of people who actively questioned the need to apportion blame, and rightly so. On the one hand we are encouraging an amicable approach at mediation, and on the other we are telling them to shine a spotlight on what’s gone wrong in their relationship!
“Needless to say this long overdue announcement will come as a huge relief to many, many couples considering, or in the process of going through, a divorce.”
In a recent survey carried out by Simpson Millar almost half (48%) of participants were unaware of the need to apportion blame during divorce; prompting almost a fifth (17%) to say they would be prepared to lie or be lied about in court in order to speed up the divorce process.
A further 20% said they didn’t know what they would be prepared to do when push came to shove.
Furthermore, 22% considered lying during divorce proceedings to be no worse than missing a doctor’s appointment and 17% considered lying no worse than ‘pulling a sickie’.
Fiona said, “The findings of the survey demonstrated perfectly why we needed this reform. It has been a long time coming, but it will make a huge difference to those who are looking to divorce and keep acrimony to a minimum; and especially in those cases where children are involved.”
