Industrial Disease focussing on Mesothelioma and Asbestos related illness cases.
Helen has 20 years of asbestos disease experience having started out helping many asbestos related disease victims who were employed by the Royal Navy and MoD at Devonport Dockyard; working on board many vessels such as HMS Verulam, HMS Hermes, HMS Danae, HMS Sirius and the Ark Royal where asbestos was widely used.
Since then Helen has helped many other people from all over the UK who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma from wrongful exposures to asbestos dust from sufferers who worked in factories, schools, hospitals, colleges, shops and from laundering dusty overalls. Often the asbestos dust is in the form of microscopic fibres and so sufferers are unaware of their exposures. Some of these victims include family members and this has enabled Helen to become acutely aware of the impact this dreadful disease can have on the person diagnosed and those close to them.
Helen has successfully pursued many low level asbestos exposure cases where insurance companies have mounted challenges and is a very effective negotiator, making every effort to ensure mesothelioma sufferers or their former work mates do not have to give evidence at Court.
Helen makes good use of the new Government Mesothelioma Payment Scheme where some mesothelioma cases can be settled very soon after diagnosis with minimal disruption to the mesothelioma sufferer and their family.
Helen has specialised purely in mesothelioma cases for many years and has a clear vision as to how these very sad cases should be pursued with minimal disruption to the victim’s family time which cannot be replaced.
Helen qualified as a Solicitor in 1997 and specialised in asbestos disease claims with national trade union firm Russell Jones & Walker. Helen dealt with mesothelioma claims at Irwin Mitchell and also at Novum Law. Helen has worked on a variety of complex low level asbestos claims and recently managed to secure a 6 figure settlement and avoid a 3 day trial listed in the High Court for a welding lecturer who was exposed to asbestos dust at his College and also whilst in the Royal Navy.
Helen has prepared articles and witness appeals for many local newspapers and helped to raise funds for a variety of charities associated with mesothelioma.
Helen recently assisted the producers of the Victoria Derbyshire News Programme to give advice and information in relation to teachers and pupils who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. Helen works closely with leading Barristers, respiratory consultants and expert engineers in the asbestos disease arena to ensure the best outcomes for her clients.
"For many years, I have been covering the Southwest and have successfully represented many mesothelioma and lung cancer clients from Cornwall, Plymouth, Torbay, Exeter, North Devon and Yeovil. Often I make claims against the same employers and am familiar with the insurance companies providing the cover for these employers. Often the employers have long gone out of business but the insurance companies still exist."
"Whilst I am able to secure financial settlements for many of my clients, different treatment options and a cure to this dreadful disease are the real necessities."
"Simpson Millar provides funding for the newly introduced Mesothelioma Research Fund through the British Lung Foundation. We cannot turn back the clock and like many other harmful exposures such as diesel fumes; the damage has been done and we need to now really focus on treatments and continuing asbestos exposures."
Helen is recommended in the Legal 500 United Kingdom 2017 edition for her work in the Personal Injury sector. She "has a strong track record in advising on lung cancer, pleural thickening and asbestosis claims."
Helping and supporting Facial Palsy UK with advice and support for those affected following her son’s diagnosis of facial paralysis after contracting encephalitis. Fund raising activities for victims of asbestos exposure and helping to set up a friendship group in Plymouth for victims of asbestos disease exposure.
