Professional Biography

Alex's academic journey began with a BA Hons in Classical Studies at Newcastle University from 2010 to 2013. She further pursued her passion for law by completing a Graduate Diploma in Law at the University of Sussex between 2014 and 2015, followed by a Master of Law (LLM) from the University of Law in 2015-2016.

Alex joined Simpson Millar in August 2022 from another firm, bringing with her a strong track record of successfully representing individuals in private and public law claims, focusing on cases arising out of the criminal justice sphere. Since joining us, she has worked on a wide range of cases in the department, focusing on trafficking cases and has strengthened the Public Law and Human Rights team’s offering in claims against the police. Alex’s extensive experience in prison law, criminal defence, criminal appeals, and civil litigation provides her with a thorough understanding of the criminal justice system. This expertise is essential in her successful representation of clients in civil claims against the state. Her work is predominantly claimant-focused, advocating for individuals with vulnerabilities, both in custody and the community. Alex’s day-to-day responsibilities surround a diverse range of litigation, including trafficking and asylum support, HRA claims, false imprisonment, actions against the police, HM Prison and Probation Service and other state authorities.

With over five years of post-qualification experience (PQE) in administrative, civil liberties, and human rights law, Alex's current portfolio routinely involves representing bereaved families in inquests into the deaths of their loved ones. She actively pursues Judicial Review claims against public authorities, including the Home Office on behalf of victims of trafficking, and has recently addressed issues related to the Bibby Stockholm barge cases.

Professional Memberships/Accreditations

Alex is a formally accredited Police Station Representative. She is also a legal panel member of the Centre for Women’s Justice, aligning with her passion for supporting women’s rights through strategic litigation and policy work. Her commitment to justice is further demonstrated by her membership in INQUEST, where she contributes to the advocacy for bereaved families.

Alex’s motivation for pursuing a career in law was sparked by a desire to address injustices and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by the criminal justice system. She is particularly drawn to challenging cases that involve legal and ethical questions, finding satisfaction in offering clear, well-reasoned legal advice and achieving compensation for her clients.
