Kitan is a Paralegal in our Education department, who helps clients with their education-related appeals and legal claims.
Her role involves advising parents and young people, taking calls, maintaining internal records and progressing cases in an efficient and timely way.
She also works with Public Law and Community Care Associate Solicitor Verity Altaras on her cases.
Prior to joining Simpson Millar, Kitan was a Paralegal in a criminal defence firm, supporting Solicitors in prison law.
During this time, she took instructions and advised on matters pertaining to Independent Adjudications, parole reviews and recategorisation. She also worked on cases involving human trafficking and modern slavery criminal appeals.
Kitan has also undertaken a legal internship at the human rights law reform organisation JUSTICE, where she undertook background research, organised data, summarised literature findings and wrote informative briefs for the following reports – Mental Health and Fair Trial, Preventing Digital Exclusion from Online Justice and Innovations in Personally-Delivered Advice.
She has volunteered with Communities Empowerment Network and worked as a Youth Advocate for BLAM UK, where she was invited to give presentations to community groups and speak on a podcast hosted by the Children’s Society about challenging racism in the education system.
In addition, Kitan received a full scholarship from the Kalisher Trust, a charity supporting traditionally underrepresented individuals pursuing a career at the criminal Bar, to do her Criminal Justice LLM and received a scholarship from Middle Temple to do her Bar Professional Training Course.
Kitan will start pupillage at Red Lion Chambers in January 2022.

Kitan is a member of the Criminal Bar Association, Young Legal Aid Lawyers, Women in Criminal Law and Human Rights Lawyers Association.
Interests outside of work
Kitan is a keen dancer and has performed on stage at Wembley Arena.
She has also volunteered with many organisations, including Citizens Advice, Support Through Court, APPEAL, Howard League for Penal Reform and Mind.
