Our Medical Negligence Solicitors are offering a free claims assessment to maternity patients who may have received negligent care from East Kent Hospitals University Trust.

A Freedom of Information request from the Daily Mail has found that at least 124 babies died shortly after birth at the NHS Trust’s maternity units since 2013. However, only a fifth of these deaths were reported to coroners, despite many being sudden and unexplained.

The newspaper also learned that out of the 93 stillbirths and newborn deaths in the last two years, only 11 led to a serious incident investigation.

East Kent Hospitals University Trust runs its maternity services at the William Harvey in Ashford and the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in Margate. If you attended the maternity units at either of these hospitals and have concerns about the care you received, get in touch with our Medical Negligence Solicitors for a free claims assessment.

The figures from the Daily Mail come six months after the Government ordered an independent inquiry into East Kent Hospitals University Trust’s maternity services. This was announced following reports of at least 7 preventable baby deaths at the Trust’s hospitals since 2016.

We hope this investigation helps to highlight potential issues in these maternity units, and leads to lessons being learned both in East Kent and across the rest of England and Wales.

A spokesperson for East Kent Hospitals University Trust has insisted that “significant” changes to maternity care have already been made.

“We will not rest until we are delivering an outstanding maternity service,” the Trust said. “We have welcomed the independent investigation into East Kent maternity services and we are doing everything in our power to assist and support it.”
