Joseph Quigley, a former priest, has been jailed for 11 years and 6 months following multiple convictions in December.

The 56-year-old abused his victim between 2006 and 2009 whilst he was working as a priest at a Warwickshire church, and as a private tutor. The victim was only 14 when the abuse began.

Quigley denied all charges against him, including four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, two counts of sexual assault, one count of child cruelty and two counts of false imprisonment. But he has since been jailed and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.

What Happened?

The Court heard that over the 6-year period, Quigley would rub his victim’s inner thigh after making him wear his gym kit. He would also make the victim shower with the door open, and punished him by locking him in the church crypt and beating him with a hurling stick.

He was forced to resign once the offences came to light.

“As a priest, Joseph Quigley used his position to commit depraved offences against the victim who trusted and respected him, and he abused that trust,” said Tamina Greaves, from the Crown Prosecution Service.

While Quigley was only charged with offences relating to the one victim, the Court heard that there was another victim who had also been abused by him when he was 16-17 years old. And it’s possible that there could be more victims who have not yet come forward.

Warwickshire Police are urging “anyone who may have been a victim of sexual abuse to come forward and report this to us, regardless of when the abuse happened.”

Detective Sergeant Abigail Simpson, the investigating officer for the Quigley case, has praised the victim for his “immense bravery in disclosing what happened to him,” and hopes that the sentencing “offers some comfort and closure.”
