Great Ormond Street hospital has sought to reassure patients and families after a former porter was accused of child abuse. Paul Farrell is facing 84 charges following his arrest in January, including sexual assault of a child under 13, rape and attempted rape.

Responding to the news, Great Ormond Street hospital acknowledged that patients and their families would have “concerns or questions”. But it has insisted that if anyone raises concerns about staff, there is a “clear and swift process” to deal with them straight away. This, it said, includes “involving the police where needed”.

The hospital added that safeguarding children is “fundamental” to the care it provides and that its policies are in line with national best practice. Great Ormond Street Hospital is now working with police to support its investigation.

We are absolutely shocked and horrified to learn of the charges brought against a porter at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Not only is the staff member responsible for working with children, who are of the most vulnerable groups in society, but that it also occurred whilst they attended the hospital.

We would urge anyone with information to contact the Metropolitan Police who are carrying out an ongoing investigation. If you have been abused in an institution outside the family home, such as a hospital, you may have a claim for compensation.
