Simpson Millar client “may lose part of leg” after First Choice waterslide accident

Simpson Millar is fighting a case against First Choice, after a father of two sustained serious injuries while using a waterslide on holiday in Turkey, which may result in him losing the lower part of his right leg.

Window fitter and fitness enthusiast Des Jarvis, 45, fractured his leg in six places after he was sent catapulting out of a chute on the waterslide and crashed into a wall in the pool.

Doctors have advised him the bone in his injured leg had developed an infection and may have to be amputated just above the ankle.

Mr Jarvis says that the waterslides at the First Choice hotel he stayed at are “death traps” and the accident has “ruined his life”.

He now struggles to even climb the stairs in his home, but before the accident Mr Jarvis played golf twice a week and was a keen member of his local gym, which he attended every day.

Mr Jarvis stayed at the Didim Beach Resort in Altinkum with his partner Nikki and their four children, paying £5,500 for the First Choice holiday.

Doctors in Turkey operated on him, but he claims that he was told by First Choice holiday representatives that if the accident had happened in the UK the leg would have been amputated.

He has had further surgery in the UK and was left for a period with an open wound around the metal plate inserted in his leg.

Mr Jarvis says that while in hospital in Turkey after the accident, First Choice representatives did not visit him until three days after the accident.

“The tour operators couldn’t care less about what had happened. They went out of their way not to help — it’s destroyed my faith in humanity,” says Mr Jarvis.

Simpson Millar’s Head of Travel Nick Harris said:

“Des only wants what he deserves for his ordeal, which is adequate compensation.”

Although some aspects of health and safety in Turkey may not be to the same standards as in the UK, First Choice is insisting all its hotels are safe.

A spokeswoman for First Choice said:

“We operate the strictest quality controls across all our hotels.”
