Education Law

Lucy Atherton

Associate Solicitor, Education and Community Care

Leeds

Areas of Expertise:

Lucy is a Solicitor in our Public Law team, specialising in education law and disability discrimination cases.

This includes making sure children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities get suitable education and provision.

Lucy has achieved this through advice and negotiation, as well as Tribunal appeals and Judicial Review proceedings.

She has also represented families in a number of successful Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal appeals, including appeals to the Upper Tribunal.

Lucy qualified as a Litigator in an international commercial firm before moving to IPSEA (Independent Providers of Special Education Advice) to specialise in education law.

In this role, as well as representing families, Lucy developed and delivered training to local authorities and other professionals on education and discrimination law.

Lucy’s reported cases include Derbyshire County Council v EM and DM (SEN) [2019] UKUT 240 (AAC), which clarified the law around securing education otherwise than in a setting (‘EOTAS’) through an EHC plan.

Interests outside of work

Outside of work, Lucy enjoys attending a local choir and book group, but her free time is largely monopolised by her toddler.
