Lana Hylands is a Solicitor within our Public Law & Human Rights department, based in our London office.

Professional Biography

Lana obtained a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the Open University in 2020 whilst working in the charity sector, including for Citizens Advice in the crown court, and then at another law firm. She completed the Solicitors Qualifying Exam in 2022 and was admitted as a Solicitor in July 2023. She worked for over four years in claims against public authorities, focusing on actions against the police, first as a Paralegal and then as a Trainee, at another law firm.

During her training, Lana worked on a diverse range of cases that significantly shaped her expertise. She worked on discrimination claims against the police, claims related to failures in investigating modern slavery and abuse, and inquests concerning femicide (intentional killing with a gender-related motivation) and domestic violence. She also assisted clients in failure to protect claims on behalf of prison inmates. Notably, Lana contributed to significant inquiries, including Phase 2 of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry and the Uncover Policing Inquiry.

Lana specialises in claims against public authorities. Her work in Public Law primarily involves challenges on behalf of victims of trafficking and Judicial Reviews against the Home Office and Local Authorities. In her civil cases (legal disputes between private parties or organisations), Lana focuses in part on claims under the Human Rights Act and the Equality Act.

In her day-to-day role, Lana manages a varied caseload that includes public law claims, damages claims, and inquest work. She engages with a broad range of legal challenges, applying her knowledge and experience to advocate effectively for her clients.

Lana Hylands has a strong foundation not only in legal practice but also in community engagement and activism. Before joining the legal profession, she dedicated significant time to community and political campaigning, as well as charity work. Her previous volunteer work includes in the field of health advocacy, where she focused on promoting equal access to medication and fighting against health-related stigma and discrimination. This commitment to social justice and equity informs her legal practice, adding depth to her work with clients who face challenging circumstances.
