This week, Simpson Millar have been marking Mental Health Awareness Week, and for our Serious Injury Solicitors, it’s been a very timely event.

The mental health of our clients and their loved ones is always a priority for us, so we’ve been very aware of the added distress caused by coronavirus.

And we’ve been just as focused on supporting each other within our team too at this difficult time.

In this article, Serious Personal Injury Solicitor Matthew Clayton, Paralegals Ruxandra Chirita and Agnieszka Januszkiewicz, and Matthew’s Secretary Jacki Smith describe what they’ve been doing to support mental health, both with their clients and each other.

“It’s been a struggle to deal with this lockdown, but at Simpson Millar, we were organised and ready for this thanks to very prompt and clear leadership."

“We have continued to help our vulnerable clients as best we can over the telephone, by email and, on occasion, Zoom."

“As a secretary, I spend a lot of time liaising with clients and experts arranging our conferences and I always find that extra line of ‘I hope you are well’ tends to get some lovely feedback."

“It gets them talking about any issues or worries they have about the case, as well as about life in general and how they’re coping. Some of our clients are extremely vulnerable and something as simple as calling or emailing and starting with ‘how are you?’ can be a real eye-opener."

“It shows we do care and honestly if we can help in any way, we will."

“One way I’ve helped recently for a client is setting up a video call. I talked a client through how to download and set up the platform and got a user guide to them."

“For others, we’ve called simply to check what makes them most comfortable for group discussions before proceeding and even rearranged meetings to fit around their ever-changing needs."

“Some of our medical experts have been helping out in the NHS, so we’re also finding ways to work around them and their new schedules to keep our cases going."

“One of the most important parts of my role is keeping the team motivated, because we’re people too and our adjustment to this Covid-19 situation was thrust upon us."

“The company’s reaction was incredible and physically we were well prepared, but mentally we weren’t."

“At first, I started with daily team meetings so we still had our normality, and we even jokingly sent messages to group chats asking if anyone wanted a brew as we would in the office."

“But keeping everyone going can be tricky. From then on, I’ve hosted a weekly team quiz to boost morale, we play little word games and it give us that much-needed team bond that you lose when you lack human interaction."

“Mental health can be up and down within the team. Some days are harder than others and it shows when we have our meetings, but we’re always there for one another."

“We support each other and now we’re more like a family because of it. Covid-19 may have separated us but it’s also brought us all together and taught us to show more kindness.”
