As the cost of fuel remains high, more of us are taking to the roads on our bicycles, not only to save money but also to make the most of the health benefits. But there are some important things to remember when you are out on the roads to help keep you safe.

  • Make sure you know the Highway Code - You may think that this was just for car drivers passing their test, but it also contains some important rules for cyclists.  The Highway Code was updated in early 2022 and includes some important changes which give cyclists more priority over other road users.
  • Wear a properly fitted bicycle safety helmet - It’s important to purchase one that is a good fit and complies with EU Safety Standards.
  • Always use lights after dark or when visibility is poor – it is a legal requirement! - A white light at the front of your bike and a red light at the back is required to comply with road safety laws.
  • Wear high visibility and reflective clothing and accessories at all times - It’s advisable to wear these at all times, not just in poor lighting conditions.
  • Always maintain a safe distance between yourself and other road users - While it might be tempting to ride close to another vehicle, it can also be dangerous - especially if they are not aware of you.
  • Alert other road users to your presence - All bicycles should be fitted with a bell to alert other road users of your presence if needed.  This includes motor vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Clearly signal your intentions – other road users can’t read your mind - If you are changing lane, turning into a junction or slowing down you must clearly indicate. If you are involved in an accident and you havn’t done this it may affect your legal standing.
  • Do not cycle on a pavement unless it’s a designated cycle path - Many people don’t realise it is illegal to ride a bike on a pavement. It also increases the chance of you colliding with pedestrians which could potentially land you in legal trouble.

While it is always a good idea to abide by the advice above for your own safety, it is also in your best interests to do so in case you are unfortunately involved in an accident. The outcome of these cases are often decided upon by the balance of probability of who is to blame. By not following the Highway Code and the above tips it could not only be dangerous for you as the rider, but also put you at a disadvantage should it come to you making a claim for compensation because of an accident.  It could also make you liable for a claim against you if you were found to be at fault.

If you are involved in a cycling accident, it’s important to get professional legal advice. You may be able to claim compensation and other costs.
