Rehabilitation for Brain Injured Bikers after Motorcycle Accident

If a biker has suffered a serious brain injury after a motorcycle accident, we’ll instruct an independent case manager early on, who can arrange the specialist care and rehabilitation you need.

A case manager is almost like a ‘medical PA’ and will co-ordinate the private treatment plan (to supplement and not replace NHS provision). They’ll arrange things such as:

  • Botox treatment to ease any spasticity
  • Private intensive physiotherapy treatment
  • A placement at a brain injury rehabilitation unit to assist in regaining living skills
  • Care and assistance and/or a ‘buddy’
  • Aids and adaptations to accommodation
  • Suitable short or long term accommodation if, for instance, their current accommodation is no longer suitable
  • Vocational and occupational therapy
  • Other therapies, such as hydrotherapy

Even if there’s a dispute over who’s at fault, insurance companies will often engage in rehabilitation early.

Once a Biker, Always a Biker

Rehabilitation for a brain injured biker is pretty much the same as it is for anyone who suffers a brain injury.

But in my experience, brain injured bikers often prefer to be represented by someone who is also a biker or is sympathetic to motorcyclists, as there’s a lot of prejudice against them in society.

The phrase ‘Once a biker, always a biker’ also often rings true, as most bikers, in spite of their injuries, will often want to return to the motorcycling world in some way, either by getting back on a motorcycle or just supporting motorcycle sport in general.

For most, riding isn’t just a way of commuting, but a way of life, a passion, and often something of an addiction. Bikers by their very nature are often very independent and adventurous, so they’re better represented by someone who understands and respects this lifestyle.

Our team of expert Motorcycle Accident Solicitors includes several passionate bikers, who understand the unique issues bikers face on the roads and the prejudices they often face.

For example, people often assume that bikers ride fast because their bikes make a lot of noise. But this isn’t always the case, and our biker clients are naturally often worried about arguments over who’s at fault because of this.

And if you want to return to motorcycling if at all possible, we’ll try to help with this, as long as it’s safe.

The Impact of Brain Injuries

Brain injuries vary greatly from post-concussion syndrome to subtle brain injury, moderate brain injury and severe traumatic brain injuries.

Strangely, it’s often the subtle brain injuries that are the most difficult to work with, as to all intents and purposes, a person can appear ‘normal’ to most, but can struggle with problems such as:

  • Memory loss
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating

Because the issues may only appear to be mild, a person with a subtle brain injury will often try to mask their issues for fear of embarrassment.

In that case, your Motorbike Accident Solicitor or Lawyer may need to interview friends and family members to create a ‘before’ and ‘after’ picture.

Severe traumatic brain injuries, meanwhile, can result in spasticity, which can be extremely painful. Early intervention with Botox injections for this is crucial, as this is often not available on the NHS, and these clients can sometimes need a short stint in a brain injury rehabilitation unit.

Most brain injuries increase the chances of a person developing post traumatic epilepsy, especially for the first few years after the accident, so this is something that we always need to keep an eye on, as epilepsy, especially if uncontrolled, can turn someone’s life upside down.

Rehabilitation from a severe traumatic brain injury can also mean a person needs to change accommodation.

We have many clients we have purchased, rented and adapted their property for, to make sure that their rehabilitation continues at home. This can include using things such as therapy rooms, or even a hydrotherapy pool (if that is supported by medical evidence).

It normally takes some years for a brain injured person to reach a plateau in their recovery, and it’s usually when it’s felt that the maximum recovery has been reached and the likely position for the future is known that the compensation claim can be valued and hopefully settled.
