Joy has over 34 years’ experience in handling all types of employment law matters, including highly complex cases, and has been acting for trade union clients throughout her career. Before joining Simpson Millar as a Partner in 2004, Joy was a Partner and Head of the Employment Department at her previous firm. 

Joy gives strategic and legal advice to trade unions and professional associations and their members, non-union employees, managers and senior executives.  She is widely recognised and respected for her work in promoting equal opportunities, especially pay discrimination, and for her knowledge and expertise on working time issues and holiday pay, in particular.

Trade unions rely on Joy’s wide ranging advice backed by her many decades of assisting unions and their members in an industrial context. Joy gives union officials advice on how to use individual members’ legal rights to best effect, advice in support of collective bargaining, and is involved in ACAS collective conciliation and, where necessary, advises on industrial action. 

Joy helps her clients, whether individual or union/collective to find the most effective way to achieve the best outcome for them and advises when, and on what terms, to settle by agreement or when to make a legal challenge in the Employment Tribunal and/or Court.

Joy is based in Clerkenwell, near the Barbican.  She has worked in London since 1981 and is proud of all the positive values London represents.
In October 2017, Joy gave a talk at the White Paper Industrial Action Conference, where she outlined what now needs to be included on an industrial action ballot paper following the requirements introduced by the Trade Union Act 2016.

Interests

In her spare time Joy likes to work on her allotment and enjoys wild swimming.
