Based in: Leeds
Jane is the Head of the Family Law team at Simpson Millar in Leeds and qualified as a solicitor in 1997.
Jane has specialised in family law throughout her career and has extensive experience in guiding clients through all aspects of family breakdown including divorce and dissolution of civil partnerships particularly complex financial settlements where there is an overseas property, business assets, pension, trust or farming element. Jane has extensive knowledge of cohabitation disputes and advises on separation, pre-nuptial agreements and settling arrangements where there are issues relating to children.
Jane provides strong practical advice with a preference for negotiating settlements wherever possible. Her aim is to find creative, amicable and constructive outcomes for the client. She has a conciliatory but firm approach with a keen focus on resolving disputes in the most cost effective manner. Jane strongly believes the first route to settlement should be by attempting to achieve an amicable resolution but equally has a wealth of experience in taking matters through the court system when a more structured approach is necessary. Jane trained as a collaborative lawyer in 2006 and is a passionate advocate of the process.
Jane is often described by her peers as a “safe pair of hands”. Jane places the best interests of the client at the centre of every case and can be relied upon to guide clients in an empathetic and supportive manner.
Jane is a member of Resolution and is on the West and North Yorkshire Resolution committee. Jane is involved in actively campaigning for policy change in family law and as a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Family has recently presented a paper calling for “no fault” divorce to be introduced.
Jane was a founding member of the Kirklees and Calderdale Collaborative Law Group and as a member of the Dovetail group is committed to promoting a non-confrontational and cost effective solution for her clients.
Jane runs a mentoring scheme with students from the BPP Law School and runs a free legal advice clinic at the Simpson Millar offices in Leeds each Tuesday at 10am.
Jane is a keen and long (often suffering) supporter of Leeds United. Jane has a great love of music and regularly attends the new Leeds arena.
