Maelys Djomo Touani

Maelys Djomo Touani is a Paralegal within our Medical Negligence department. She is based in Manchester. 

Professional biography 

In her day-to-day role, Maelys assists solicitors with medical negligence claims on behalf of people who have suffered injury as a result of medical care. She supports cases from the initial stages, including setting up new client files, drafting client agreements and other legal documents, obtaining medical records, reviewing evidence, and preparing detailed timelines of events with clients. 

Maelys also liaises regularly with clients, hospitals, defendants, solicitors, and other parties involved in a claim. Her responsibilities include obtaining initial legal advice on potential claims, preparing forms of authority that allow relevant records and information to be requested, liaising with after-the-event (ATE) insurance providers, managing caseloads, and ensuring important deadlines are met. 

Maelys has experience supporting clients with medical negligence claims and has developed a strong understanding of the importance of clear, compassionate communication when working with people who may have experienced serious harm as a result of medical care. 

Before joining Simpson Millar in July 2026, Maelys worked at another law firm, initially as a Clinical Negligence Legal Assistant before progressing to the role of Clinical Negligence Paralegal. During this time, she communicated regularly with clients by telephone and email to understand their experiences, gather important information, and ensure they remained informed throughout the legal process. She also drafted legal documents, handled new enquiries, and helped assess potential medical negligence claims. 

Before beginning her legal career, Maelys worked as a Care Assistant, supporting people with mental health conditions and complex needs. Her responsibilities included assisting with personal care, preparing meals, providing activities and companionship, and helping to create a safe and compassionate environment for residents. Maelys deliberately sought this experience because of her interest in pursuing a career in medical negligence and wanted to develop a first-hand understanding of care settings and the responsibilities owed to people receiving support. 

This experience gave Maelys valuable insight into the importance of dignity, compassion, and appropriate standards of care, as well as the impact that poor care can have on individuals and their families. She brings this understanding to her work with clients who have experienced harm following medical treatment.
