Liza Connolly is a Solicitor within our Medical Negligence department, based in Liverpool.

Professional biography

In her current role, Liza represents clients who have suffered serious and often life-changing injuries as a result of clinical negligence. Her work involves running cases from the very beginning through to conclusion, including matters that proceed to trial. She has extensive experience handling cases from initial instruction, through investigation and evidence gathering, to settlement or court proceedings where necessary.

Before joining Simpson Millar, Liza worked at another law firm, where she played a key role in developing and expanding the firm’s civil litigation work. During this time, she worked across a broad range of areas including Personal Injury, Housing Law, and Debt Recovery. She was instrumental in building the Debt Recovery department from the ground up, taking responsibility for its development and ongoing management. When the firm introduced Clinical Negligence work in 2012, Liza was closely involved in implementing this new area of practice. Over time, she developed significant experience in this field and went on to become Head of Clinical Negligence in 2018, leading the department and managing complex claims on behalf of injured clients.

Liza has built strong professional relationships with barristers and medical experts over many years, which supports early advice on whether a claim is likely to succeed and the best way to move forward. She is known for her careful and methodical approach to case management and for running her files with a high level of attention to detail, always striving to achieve the best possible outcome for her clients.

Case studies / notable cases

In a matter unrelated to clinical negligence, Liza previously acted for a local teenager who was seriously assaulted in a public park by a group of intoxicated individuals. The case attracted media attention due to its severity and impact. Liza made an application on the client’s behalf to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, and the claim resulted in an award of over £500,000 in compensation. The compensation secured was life-changing for the client and provided vital long-term support following the injuries he sustained. This case remains particularly significant to Liza due to the positive and lasting difference it made to her client’s life.

Educational background

Liza studied Law (Bachelor of Laws with Honours) at Liverpool John Moores University, graduating with a 2:1 in 2002. She went on to complete the Legal Practice Course (LPC) at the College of Law in Chester, where she achieved a Commendation, in 2003. She was admitted as a Solicitor on 15 January 2009.

Personal statement

Liza did not initially know which career path she wanted to follow, but after choosing A-Level Law she quickly discovered a strong interest in the subject and a clear sense of direction for her future. She is motivated by supporting people at times when they are most vulnerable and takes great pride in helping clients rebuild their lives after suffering injury as a result of medical negligence. Being able to make a meaningful and lasting difference to someone’s future gives her genuine professional satisfaction.
