Areas of Expertise:

Leila Albin is a Legal Executive within our Public Law and Human Rights department. She is based in London.

Professional biography

Leila’s work involves representing vulnerable individuals in complex and sensitive cases, advising clients, drafting and reviewing legal documents, preparing legal aid applications, attending court hearings and instructing counsel.

Leila is also instructed on behalf of a bereaved family in a complex Article 2 jury inquest and is developing her inquest practice alongside Basmah Sahib.

Leila has particular experience in judicial review proceedings involving immigration, refugee protection and government decision-making. Before qualifying as a CILEX Lawyer in July 2026, she played a key role in several significant judicial review challenges concerning the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP), supporting individuals seeking protection and resettlement in the UK.

Since joining Simpson Millar, Leila has continued to represent clients fleeing Taliban rule in Afghanistan, as well as survivors of trafficking, in complex public law challenges. Her work involves assisting individuals facing difficult circumstances and challenging decisions that may have significant consequences for their safety, rights and future.

Earlier in her career, Leila worked on strategic judicial review litigation concerning arms export licensing and refugee resettlement schemes. She also gained experience in proceedings before the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC), involving complex national security issues and closed material procedures.

In addition, Leila assisted with Freedom of Information Act appeals brought by journalists and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). These cases concerned government transparency, access to information and public accountability on matters of significant public interest.

Through her experience across judicial review, human rights litigation and public authority challenges, Leila has developed a strong understanding of public law procedure and the legal issues affecting vulnerable individuals. She is committed to helping clients understand their legal rights and challenging decisions and actions by public bodies where there are grounds to do so.

Leila is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX).

Educational background

Leila holds an LLB in Law with First Class Honours from the University of Birmingham.

She subsequently completed an LLM in International Development Law and Human Rights at the University of Warwick, graduating with Distinction.

Leila also qualified as a CILEX Lawyer with litigation practice rights on 29 July 2026.

Personal statement

Leila's commitment to human rights law is closely connected to her personal experiences. As a Syrian-British individual, she spent seven years of her childhood living in Syria before the outbreak of war in 2011.

When she returned to the UK using her British passport, she became increasingly aware of the opportunities and protections her citizenship provided, particularly when compared with the experiences of friends and peers who had been displaced by the conflict.

These experiences shaped her understanding of the importance of human rights, access to justice and legal protection for vulnerable individuals. They also inspired her decision to pursue a career in law, with a particular focus on helping people whose rights and freedoms may be at risk.

Leila is passionate about using her legal knowledge and experience to support individuals facing challenging circumstances, ensuring their voices are heard and that public authorities can be held accountable for their decisions and actions.
