Paralegal, Abuse Claims
Manchester

Hayley Birks is a Paralegal within our Abuse Claims team.
Professional Biography
Hayley studied Jurisprudence (Bachelor of Arts in Law) at Hertford College, University of Oxford, graduating in 2019 with a 2:1. Her studies provided her with a strong academic foundation in legal principles and critical thinking. Hayley is due to begin the Legal Practice Course (LPC) in September 2026 and intends to qualify as a Solicitor.
Following university, Hayley spent three years working at the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in London, where she gained valuable experience supporting criminal prosecutions. She initially worked as a Crown Court Paralegal Assistant, where she supported cases involving some of the most serious offences and worked directly with victims, including those affected by abuse. This role gave her important insight into the criminal justice process and the support needs of individuals during highly sensitive cases.
She later progressed to the role of Paralegal Officer, where she managed her own caseload. In this position, Hayley was responsible for progressing cases through the court system, working closely with prosecutors, police, and witnesses, and ensuring that matters were prepared thoroughly and efficiently.
Hayley joined Simpson Millar in March 2025 as a Paralegal in the Abuse Claims team. In her current role, she supports a Team Leader with all aspects of their caseload, assisting with case preparation, liaising with clients, and helping to progress claims. Her previous experience means she brings a strong understanding of working with vulnerable individuals and handling sensitive matters with care.
Hayley has always been motivated by helping people during some of the most difficult periods of their lives, whether that involves supporting access to justice, helping individuals find closure, or restoring a sense of dignity. This commitment led her to join Simpson Millar, where the Abuse Claims team and wider Public Law work focus on supporting vulnerable individuals and addressing deeply human and often complex issues. She is dedicated to playing a part in helping clients feel heard, supported, and empowered to move forward.
