Bernadette Barrett is a Solicitor Graduate Apprentice in our Public Law and Human Rights department, based in our London office.

Professional Biography

Bernadette began on her academic journey at Winchester University, where she graduated with a degree in Forensic Studies in 2019. She continued her education at Oxford Brookes University, achieving a Distinction in the Graduate Diploma in Law in 2022. During her time in University, Bernadette was an active volunteer with Amicus ALJ, a legal charity focused on justice for death row inmates. Her commitment to the cause was recognised when her team won the "Stand Out Fundraiser" award at Amicus' student awards for two consecutive years. Following her studies, Bernadette worked as a Court Case Administrator for the HM Prison and Probation Service before joining Simpson Millar in November 2022 as a Paralegal. Since January 2024, she has been training as a Solicitor Graduate Apprentice, undertaking the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) as part of her apprenticeship.

In her daily role, Bernadette supports the Public Law and Human Rights team by drafting legal documents, including letters and witness statements, reviewing records to create chronologies, and attending and taking detailed notes at meetings. As she progresses in her training, Bernadette has begun to take on more responsibilities, including leading client meetings and contributing more significantly to the management of cases.

Bernadette is committed to using her legal expertise to empower individuals and provide them with the platform to seek justice. She is driven by the opportunity to support vulnerable people, a commitment that has been a significant motivation in her choice to pursue a career in law. Bernadette describes her work as "fighting the good fight," reflecting her dedication to making a meaningful impact in the lives of those she represents, particularly in challenging Public Law and Human Rights cases.
