Joy qualified in 1983. Before joining Simpson Millar as a Partner in 2004, Joy was a Partner and Head of the Employment Department at her previous firm. Joy has specialised in employment law for 29 years, mainly advising and acting for Trade Unions and their members.

She is known particularly for her expertise in Equal Opportunities, especially equal pay and indirect discrimination. Since well before their introduction, she has been advising extensively on a wide range of issues arising from the age discrimination regulations including their impact on collective agreements. Joy has also represented union supported claimants in numerous multi-party claims for holiday pay and has provided extensive advice to the union on collective solutions on this issue and been heavily involved in several of the consequential industrial negotiations.
