Slips, trips and falls at holiday accommodation are among the most common holiday injury claims – and injuries sustained can ruin a holiday and lead to long-term injury.

Hotel Hazards

  • Many hotels abroad have floors and staircases constructed from materials which keep the building cool in the heat, including marble. Stairs and floors can become slippery when wet mopped and left to dry by staff – or if other holiday makers trail water in from the pool or spill drinks and do not alert staff to the fact
  • Slipping in the shower can be extremely dangerous and lead to serious injuries, including multiple fractures and even concussion. Many hotel bathrooms abroad have tiled floors which can become slippery when damp or from condensation and so extra care needs to be taken
  • The hotel dining room can be turned into an accident blackspot if guests drop food on the floor or spill drinks and these are not wiped up. Many dining rooms have shiny floors made from materials like marble, which can be lethal once food or drink is spilled – or if they are wiped and no warning sign is put in place.

Top Safety Tips

  • Be very careful when using uncarpeted areas of your holiday accommodations – and do not wear shoes with slippery soles like leather or some plastics when walking across floors.
  • Running up and down marble stairs or across marble floors or other smooth surfaces can also lead to slips causing serious injury, so tread carefully if your holiday accommodation has staircases and floors which are smooth and shiny.
  • Tread very carefully in the hotel dining room and restaurants – especially if they are busy. Keep glancing at the floor in front of you while moving round the dining room and report any spillages to staff.
  • Make sure children do not run around dining rooms – this can not only be a hazard for elderly guests or those with mobility problems, but children can be badly injured if they fall on hard surfaces, including fracturing skulls and jaws.
  • Slipping on tiled floors can causes multiple fractures which may lead to permanent physical impairment if serious or not treated quickly – especially in elderly holiday makers
  • Most hotels will provide a bath mat if asked and it is always a good idea to request a non slip mat if your holiday bathroom has a slippery tiled floor
