Education Law, Community Care and Court of Protection
Laura is a solicitor in the Education and Community Care department, specialising in Court of Protection and Community Care.
She graduated from the University of Essex in 2012 with a first class degree in Law and Human Rights. She then undertook internships with the British Institute of Human Rights and the Public Law Project in 2012 and 2013, before working briefly as an employment law paralegal in Essex.
She joined Simpson Millar in March 2014 as a paralegal and started her training contract in 2015, completing seats in the Education, Community Care and Court of Protection teams. Laura qualified as a solicitor in December 2016.
Laura is regularly instructed by Independent Mental Capacity Advocates (IMCA), Relevant Persons Representatives, paid and unpaid (RPPR/RPR), and the Official Solicitor, on behalf of individuals who lack capacity. She also acts for family members, carers or friends of those who lack capacity.
Laura’s work with the team often involves acting in cases where a vulnerable adult wishes to challenge a standard authorisation that deprives them of their liberty. She also acts in cases where there are disagreements on a vulnerable adult’s capacity or best interests, particularly in relation to where they should live, or with whom they should have contact.
She also acts for both adults and children in relation to community care matters arising under the Care Act 2014 and the Children Act 1989.
Outside of work Laura enjoys cooking and finding exciting new restaurants to try.
