Worker suffers severe injuries to his hand following an accident at work
A hammer manufacturing firm has been fined following a nasty accident at work incident.
A Worker suffered severe injuries after his hand was caught in an industrial drill. His glove became entangled in one of the drill's rotating spindles and he suffered deep laceration injuries to his hand which resulted in him being unable to work for a month.
A Health & Safety spokesperson said: "Once again we have an incident of an employee who suffered serious injury simply because there wasn't the necessary protection around the drill. The worker is lucky he didn't lose a finger or worse."
The firm were fined £2,500 and ordered to pay £2,594 in costs.
The incident is all the more alarming because the company had identified the need to guard its drilling machines in its own risk assessment and had already received a quote to fit a suitable guard for just £165.
Accidents in the workplace are sadly all too common and often workers can claim compensation for an accident at work that wasn't their fault. Useful links
