Trending Travel: The Sickness and Accident Hotspots
Egypt, Tenerife, Turkey, Greece, the Dominican Republic and Mexico - Dream holiday destinations for the whole family, with lots to do within and outside of your resort. All of these countries have been on our radar
for one reason or another. Many people that have chosen these destinations have fallen victim to either holiday accidents, or holiday illnesses, and we've represented many of those who were affected.
Egypt Tops Our Illness Hotspot Claims
Egypt is always high on our list of illness claims. With a hot sunny climate, it's easy to see where bacteria could potentially breed and spread. The Tropicana Club Azure in Sharm-el-Sheikh is a hotel that we have heard about for a while now. Every year we get numerous reports from holiday goers
telling us the hygiene conditions there leave little to be desired.
Since 2010, holidaymakers have been complaining of gastroenteritis, food poisoning and Cryptosporidium
– all of which have symptoms of watery diarrhoea, cramping and nausea. Pink, uncooked chicken served in buffets and birds flying around, occasionally trying the food, have all been genuine complaints made by the people we have helped.
This, however, is not the only hotel in Egypt that we have received complaints about.
First Choice's Red Sea Holiday Village
, advertised as the 'ultimate family holiday' has been a holiday from hell for those whom we have heard from. The list of bugs identified there include the usual suspects, such as Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, E.Coli and Campylobacter
. Be diligent in hot countries when eating foods and careful when drinking the water, as it may not be suitable for human consumption.
The Dominican Republic is a small Caribbean island with a refreshing Latin flavour. Unfortunately, another thing it's becoming well known for is sending guests home with a little more than a tan. We represented a group who had taken a holiday to the island and stayed at the Majestic Colonial resort. Three members from the same family fell ill with Salmonella
just days into their 14 night all-inclusive stay. Thomson Holidays didn't deny or accept any responsibility, but made an offer to the sick guests.
Illness, Not Your Only Worry
Falling ill on holiday isn't the only thing you have to worry about. Accidents that happen to you or your children can also devastate a trip and potentially cost you a huge amount of money
Turkey and places not far from home such as Gran Canaria, Menorca and Lanzarote are some of our accident hotpots. Turkey in particular has a bad reputation for slips, trips and falls
leaving holidaymakers with broken arms, legs, ankles and extensive bruising. Holiday accidents are no joke and can leave you going home with severe damage.
Club Cettia Resort Hotel, a supposedly "child friendly" hotel in Marmaris left an 11-year-old boy with a deep cut to his foot after an accident by the pool. Incidents where guests had slipped on mopped floors
and water left by cleaners are also common injuries suffered in Turkey.
How Can We Help
From this short summary, it's clear that no one is immune to accidents when you go on holiday
. Whether it's an illness or a fall, it is up to the person you booked your holiday with, the Tour Operator, to ensure that the hotel is doing all they can to create a safe environment.
If this is not the case, you can make a claim against them for holiday compensation. It's also important to not let the big names put you off, First Choice, Thomson and Thomas Cook should be aware of their position and should not expose you to harm
. It helps your claim if you have booked it as a package. This way you are protected by the Package Holiday Regulations and afforded extra support by the law.
