Toyota Recalls Another 5.8 Million Cars Over Faulty Takata Airbags

The world's largest car manufacturer has issued a recall for a further 5.8 million cars because of defective Takata airbags, taking the total of recalled Toyota models because of the unsafe product to 23.1 million.

Largest Car Recall In History

Toyota's latest recall includes the Corolla and Yaris models, which were mostly sold in Japan, China and Europe.

It is expected that 1.47 million cars are being recalled in Europe, 1.16 million in Japan, 820,000 in China, and 2.35 million in other regions (not including the US).

The latest recall of models using faulty Takata airbags takes the total number of affected cars well over 100 million, with 12 major car manufacturers involved in the largest car recall in history.

Toyota's latest recall includes models produced between May 2000 and November 2001, and April 2006 and December 2014.

Takata Troubles

Takata, who produce a variety of products (including seatbelts, child seats and other safety-related items) for global car manufacturers, have been embroiled in a defective product scandal for years.

It is alleged that their airbags explode with excessive force, which has the potential to cause further injury and, in some cases, death.

The scandal has resulted in Takata facing criminal proceedings in the US, as it has been alleged that executives knew about the faulty airbags as early as 2000, but covered up the issue.

The first public statement admitting to the faulty airbags came in 2008, when Takata issued a small-scale recall on some airbags.

Since then, the scope of the issue has increased and manufacturers, including Honda, BMW, Nissan, Ford, Mazda, and Mitsubishi, have issued recalls to customers, so that faulty airbags can be replaced with safe products.

Defective Products Causing Injuries

Recalls are usually issued before a defective or faulty product can cause harm, however that's not always that case and casualties can be caused by an unsafe item, as an example Takata's airbags have been linked to multiple fatalities and over 150 injuries.
