Solicitors join forces to purchase more legal practices, caseloads and cases

Simpson Millar LLP Solicitors and Neil Hudgell Solicitors, both major law firms specialising in personal injury and medical negligence, have set up a joint venture to further develop a key legal caseload portal.

Simpson Millar LLP and Neil Hudgell will pool investment resources to expand the portal,, which offers lawyers, insolvency practitioners, accountants and other professionals an efficient and confidential way to sell legal practices and cases.

More choice for consumers

The firms believe the joint venture will extend the legal choices available to consumers and make compensation claims procedures easier to access. While continuing to focus on personal injury and medical negligence cases, the new partnership means any case will be considered in the areas of law practised by Simpson Millar LLP and Neil Hudgell.

Both firms specialise in personal injury, medical negligence and professional negligence cases, with Simpson Millar LLP adding family and probate to its roster of skills.

The portal was set up in 2011 by Neil Hudgell as part of his firm's strategic goal of growth organically and through acquisition. The launch coincided with new legal services regulations and working practices which forced lawyers to exit PI and medical negligence, some even leaving the profession for good.

Through the portal the firm has so far completed 20 deals worth £4 million, including the purchase of 4 legal practices.

Solid reputation

Simpson Millar LLP has also implemented a strategy based on acquisition and organic growth. The firm has built a solid reputation for purchasing other practices and caseloads, with deals to date reaching double figures. Simpson Millar LLP's last acquisition, completed in July 2013, included a £6m book of medical negligence work.

In combination, the firms serve clients throughout England and Wales: Simpson Millar LLP through its national network of 12 offices in major cities; Neil Hudgell from offices in Hull, Leeds, Bristol and London.

Good timing

Neil Fearn, a partner and Head of Medical Negligence at Simpson Millar LLP, noted that the common growth strategies have given both firms immense experience in providing solutions for those looking to sell caseloads or practices.

"This joint venture will mean that we have even more resources at our disposal to facilitate these deals and help other practices which may be in difficulty or wanting to exit the market for other reasons."

"The timing of the launch of this joint venture could not be more appropriate given the problems faced by practices through the market changes, lack of bank funding and problems with PII."

The partner firm's MD Neil Hudgell said the collaboration with Simpson Millar LLP is the start of an exciting new phase for both practices.

"It's clear that the changes in the legal landscape, along with the economic climate, are continuing to prompt many lawyers to reconsider their future. Our offer to purchase practices and files is proving a timely option attractive to many professionals."

"We buy any files" is aimed at those looking to retire from legal practice, free up working capital, reduce overheads and liabilities or dispose of particular files. The proposition is expected to be attractive to insolvency practitioners, financial advisors, accountants, agents and professional advisors.
