As World Water Day is celebrated across the globe, international water aid charity Just a Drop is raising awareness of exactly how much clean water can be provided to the world's poorest communities for just £1.

Just a Drop enlisted the help of school children from Blaydon West Primary School to star in its latest video for the 'Go Blue' campaign. Today, the kids will get a chance to meet the Mayor at the Gateshead Civic Centre to tell him more about why fresh water is so special.

Peter Watson, managing partner of Simpson Millar is on the Board of Trustees for Just a Drop. He said: "The annual World Water Day is a fantastic initiative which focuses our attention on the fact that not everyone has access to fresh water and sanitation. Fresh water is becoming an increasingly precious commodity and one which too many children continue to live without. We must do better in managing our resources and thereby reducing child mortality; something Just a Drop is working extremely hard to realise."

Amongst other things, Just a Drop is supporting the world's poorest communities by building wells, boreholes and pipelines - establishing sanitation programmes for some of the remotest communities in the world.

Allison Chatto of Simpson Millar's Gateshead office will join the Blaydon West kids at the Civic Centre today. She said: "They did such a marvellous job in the 'Go Blue' video. I have watched it several times already and it keeps making me smile. Of course the message is a rather more sombre one and I hope everyone who watches it will remember that £1 per month could provide clean, safe drinking water to a child for an amazing 10 years."

International Water Day was launched in 1993 and has been held on 22 March ever since. The event highlights a specific aspect of freshwater each year and in 2013, the focus is on water cooperation.
