Helping Families in Manchester

Our Manchester Family department is based in our city centre office, and is led by Kate Donohue Jones, our solicitor specialising in family law including matrimonial and children law.

Family Law FactsThe 2013 figures from the Office for National Statistics show that in England and Wales, 42% of marriages are ending in divorce. In the North West in particular, 514,154 people are now not living as a couple following a separation, divorce or civil partnership dissolution, compared to just 220,281 in Wales.

As well as this, Department for Education figures found that Manchester city has one of the highest rates of children being under the care or supervision of the local authority (LA). Statistics as of 31st March 2014 found that over 120 children per 10,000 were looked after by the LA as opposed to Leeds and Birmingham which have between 61 and 90 looked after per 10,000 children.

Family Law FactsKate, along with many of our other family solicitors, is a member of Resolution, a national organisation that aims to promote the resolution of disputes in a constructive and non-confrontational way. This means our family team are experts in supporting families with complicated and highly emotive issues including divorce, issues with child contact and LA intervention.

Supporting Non-Profit Legal Advice

We at Simpson Millar LLP are also very pleased to be supporting the development of the new Greater Manchester Law Centre. Law Centres are independent, non-profit organisations that work within communities to offer support in social welfare law. We know how important these centres are in supporting families, educating them on their rights and providing representation for people who could otherwise not afford it.
