Simpson Millar and Maxwell Gillott 'Row Hard' for charity

On 27 June 2013 the London and Wimbledon offices of Simpson Millar and Maxwell Gillott (a trading style of Simpson Millar LLP) linked well-muscled arms in a fundraising effort for the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability (RHN).

Hosted at London's City Hall by Claire Balding, Boat Race presenter and the 'face' of the London Olympics TV coverage, the 2 legal firms put up a power-packed team of 4 in the 'Row Hard' event.

Created 4 years ago by City workers to help RHN's Biomedical Engineering service, Row Hard is among the capital's favourite fundraising events. Last year's relay raised more than £40,000 to the hospital, with every indication at time of writing that 2013 will prove even more successful.

Never in any doubt about the value of our efforts for a very worthwhile cause, we were quietly confident of a good result in the race itself – a super-tough 4x500m rowing machine relay. It saw Dan Rosenberg, Bartek Bonecki, Francis Hutchinson and Fiona Callard take on 35 other teams from some of London's best-known firms, including Barclays, PWC, Santander, Google and BLP.

The team were cheered on by Amanda Davis. Amanda is currently preparing for even more testing charitable activity as she prepares for September's Communication Workers Union Humanitarian Aid (CWUHA) convoy to Bulgaria.

Our legal team turned in an impressive time of just over 7 minutes including changeovers.

As good as it was, however, we couldn't match the sub 6 minute performance of the winners. But since this was a team put together from the UK Transatantic rowing squad, we feel we acquitted ourselves rather well.

With all exhausted combatants agreeing the RHN was worth every aching ligament, the evening was rounded off with drinks and snacks – and a sense of immense satisfaction in a good job well done.
