Red carpet for red card event

It was a sold-out event supported by Doreen Lawrence OBE, First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones and Welsh sports stars: Show Racism the Red Card’s (SRTRC) annual fundraiser which was sponsored and co-organised by Simpson Millar Solicitors provided an unforgettable night of laughter and celebration.

A line-up of Wales’ premier comedians including up and coming star Marlon Davies thrilled guests at the Marriott hotel in Cardiff during Saturday’s ‘Stand up Against Racism’ comedy night. It was an entertainment-packed evening featuring a charity auction and raffle followed by dinner and dancing.

Show Racism the Red Card Event – Wales

The real aim of the event was to raise awareness and funds for Show Racism the Red Card – an anti-racism charity which was established in 1996 to produce anti-racist educational resources that harness the high profile of sports personalities to combat racism. SRTRC today organises hundreds of educational workshops in schools, community centres and sports clubs each year.

Simpson Millar’s Jenine Abdo spent the last six months helping Clare Skidmore and Jessica Gasson from Show Racism the Red Card Wales organise the event.

“It was an evening of fundraising and awareness raising but also one of celebration in recognition of the giant strides already made in the fight against racism and discrimination in its many forms. The event, which will hopefully become an annual occasion, was a great success and raised an impressive £7,000 for Show Racism the Red Card,” said Jenine.

Doreen Lawrence who has been described by SRTRC Campaign manager Sunil Patel as a ‘real role model for all those who fight inequality in society’ was the guest of honour at the event. Ms Lawrence has been a prominent human rights campaigner since the murder of her own son in 1993 – dedicated to securing justice for the victims of racially motivated crime.

According to Mr Patel, this event was the most successful fundraising event in the last six years of running the campaign in Wales. He was encouraged to know that it will help the campaign and the team in Wales gain strength and momentum moving forward.

Emma Costin who is a partner at Simpson Millar added: “The effort invested each year in visiting and educating over 10,000 young people about the negative impact racism is having on society today is immense and one that should be highly commended. Saturday’s event was a great success and I’m delighted that we as a firm were able to show our support. Initiatives which bring this issue to people’s attention are absolutely crucial.”

Simpson Millar would like to congratulate and applaud the Show Racism the Red Card Team in Wales for their immensely hard work, dedication and campaigning. As a firm we are delighted to play a role in facilitating such a memorable ‘Stand Up Against Racism’ occasion.
