New hope for Spinal Cord Injury sufferers
New research has been conducted into repairing damaged nerve fibres, offering hope to thousands of spinal cord injury (SCI)
sufferers in the UK. Research into 'nanomedicine' carried out on rats saw that animals treated with nano-spheres known as 'copolymer micelles' - which hold medication at their core – saw the rats regain control of their limbs. This new discovery has shown it is possible to restore the functional ability of cells in addition to reducing further damage to the cells.
Spinal Cord Injuries are very common. In the UK 2-3 people every day become paralysed as a result of spinal cord injury, and many may be able to claim compensation
for their SCI.
The most common spinal cord injuries result from a broken neck or back, damaging the nerves of the spinal cord inside the spinal column. Spinal cord injury can be caused by:
- Road traffic accidents
- Accidents in the workplace
- Accidents at home
- Sports injuries
- Complications following surgery

Road traffic accidents remain the biggest cause of traumatic spinal cord injuries. A 'complete' spinal cord injury results in the total loss of sensation and function below the level of the spinal injury - an 'incomplete' injury results in a partial loss.
In the past 20 years 45% of spinal cord injuries have been complete and 55% incomplete. Under 1% of people with a spinal cord injury fully recover and overall just over 50% of spinal cord injuries result in quadriplegia. Many of these people could claim compensation for their spinal cord injury.
