MG Law plugs gap in the North East for education law advice

With the launch of a dedicated Education and Community Care offering in Gateshead MG Law, one of the leading providers of advice on education, social care and health issues has responded to concerns from the Legal Services Commission regarding a lack of expert education law advice in the region.

Since 2009, MG Law has been part of the national law firm, Simpson Millar, who acquired the firm to build a stronger presence in these areas which are of vital concern to families throughout the country.

The Legal Services Commission had expressed concerns that in recent years, no firms were supplying legal aid funded education law advice in the North East. MG Law has been spearheading a campaign against the Government’s cuts to the legal aid budget and so Elaine Maxwell who set up the specialist education law firm in 1998 from offices in Lancaster was keen to close that gap.

MG Law already has offices in Lancaster, London and Birmingham providing legal aid advice on education, and the opportunity to use Simpson Millar’s Gateshead office to expand into the North East was a natural progression.

"When it comes to education law cases it is clear that some people prefer face to face contact rather than communicate with their lawyer over the phone or email," said Elaine. "I am pleased that families in the North East now have that option."

Rachel Smurthwaite who is based mainly at Simpson Millar’s Gateshead office will be the first point of call for families in the North east in need of education law advice.

"With the support of a national network of legal experts Rachel will be able to advise on a wide range of education law issues," Elaine explained.

Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Joe Mitchinson attended the event on 18 August which marked the launch and said afterwards: "It was a real honour to launch MG Law today. This organisation provides a fantastic legal service and I'm sure that many local people will benefit from its valuable advice."

Allison Chatto who is a lawyer in the Gateshead office of Simpson Millar said she was delighted that the new service had the support of the Mayor.

"It is more important than ever for people to have easy access to help and legal advice when they need it and we are constantly looking to expand the services we offer clients here in Gateshead," said Allison.

Simpson Millar’s managing partner, Peter Watson concluded: "MG Law is one of the country’s leading suppliers of legal advice in the education, health and community care sectors, and we are keen to expand the team’s reach across the country."
