Mesothelioma sufferers to get faster compensation payments

The new Mesothelioma Scheme 2008 has officially started accepting claims. Anyone who is diagnosed with Diffuse Mesothelioma will now be able to make a claim for interim payments in region of £10,000.

The scheme hopes to obtain an interim compensation payment within 6 weeks for people who where until now unable to claim under the state scheme.

It is an extremely sad fact that many Mesothelioma victims have their lives drastically cut short and the scheme hopes to help ease the burden on sufferers by providing fast compensation payments.

The types of people who can now claim include anyone:
  • exposed to asbestos from a relative eg handling work clothing
  • exposed to asbestos environmentally eg if you lived near to a factory using asbestos
  • self-employed, and
  • who cannot trace their exposure to asbestos.

Health and Safety Minister Lord McKenzie said: "We are committed to ensuring that everyone with mesothelioma can receive the payment they deserve, irrespective of their employment history, and we now expect to be able to make the first payments before the end of the year."
