Medical Negligence complaints procedure in Wales is overhauled


The medical negligence complaints procedure in Wales is set to be made easier for patients who wish to complain about the medical treatment that they have received in a hospital and who may want to claim compensation for medical negligence.

Whilst the vast majority of patients are happy with their care under the NHS in Wales, there are still many patients who feel that they have suffered medical negligence and are frustrated at the NHS’s reluctance to admit fault.

Therefore a new system has been proposed to handle medical negligence complaints up to and including a patient’s right to claim compensation for medical negligence.

This new system would provide better training for people who investigate medical negligence claims and a patient would have a named contact throughout the investigation into their allegation of medical negligence.

The new proposals will be in public consultation until 2 April 2010.

Health minister Edwina Hart said that while most patients were completely satisfied "there will be times when things do not go as well as we would wish…..When things do go wrong, one of the biggest problems facing people who want to raise a concern is that they often don’t know how to."
