Lifting the roof for homeowners
The government announced that it is relaxing the rules on planning permission to enable homeowners to convert lofts and extend properties.
This move by the government is to help families who are unable to move to bigger houses due to the current state of the property market.
From October 2008 loft conversions that are no larger than 50 cubic metres and extend no more than 20cm (8ins) from the eaves of the property will be allowed.
Rear extensions of up to 2 storeys high will also be allowed if they extend no more than 3m (10ft) from the existing property.
The new planning rules will remove as many as 80,000 householders from the planning system and stop homeowners being embroiled in red tape.
