Lawyer Recognised For A Lifetime Of Seeking Justice For Child Abuse Victims

The Law Of... lifetime achievements

Manchester based Child Abuse Solicitor, Peter Garsden, has been honoured with the award for Lifetime Achievement award at the Claims Management Awards 2017.

A unanimous decision was made by a panel of judges within the claims industry that Peter deserved the award because of his tireless efforts to help survivors of abuse.

Lifetime Achievement

Peter began his career as a solicitor in 1981. 13 years later, in 1994, he turned his efforts to providing the much needed support for abuse victims before it had been truly recognised as a practice area. His work in this area has been constant since then.

Peter was the driving force behind the set up the Association of Child Abuse Lawyers (ACAL), an organisation of compensation lawyers dedicated to improving standards of advice that is given to survivors of abuse.

Peter is also currently working with four further abuse survivor charities as part of several campaigns.

  • The first is to petition the Education Secretary to introduce a new law that would force schools, the NHS, faith groups, sport bodies, and nurseries to inform their local authority of all allegations and incidents of suspected or known abuse.
  • Peter also seeks to alter time delay laws for abuse victims.

The majority of the awards from last night's celebration were decided via nominations from colleagues within the sector. However, the Lifetime Achievement award is solely chosen by the judges of the ceremony.

This is a prestigious award and recognises the extensive and continuous effort that Peter has put into each and every case over the last 30 years.

Continuing The Fight For Justice

This award is a celebration of what has been accomplished, but with abuse claims still coming in their droves, Peter is far from finished.

He said:

"Abuse is a harrowing side of law that needs people who are willing to work hard for justice. I am so thankful to be a part of something that is so important. I have been tested over the years; it has never been easy for me to focus on this area of law, but I have been compelled by the cases I have come across."

"I am so grateful to have received this award; it's amazing to be recognised for the hard work that you do. But I must add that all this is only possible with the amazing team that I have behind me and this award is as much recognition of my work as it is theirs."
