Is the outbreak at the Hotel Playa Pesquero linked to Salmonella Food Poisoning?
Holiday travel experts, Simpson Millar LLP, is concerned to learn from reports on TripAdvisor that an outbreak of illness is affecting guests at the Hotel Playa Pesquero
in Holguin, Cuba. Reports on the popular travel review sites suggest that holidaymakers have been exposed to a mysterious sickness bug and that several guest have been admitted to a local hospital
with severe gastroenteritis.
Guests staying at the Hotel Playa Pesquero have stated that both the toilets in the public areas were ‘positively obscene’
, and cleaned only once a day despite being used by 600 guests.
The Hotel is rated as a 4 star standard by British tour operators such as Thomas Cook and cheap package holiday provider, Direct Holidays. The Playa Pesquero is said to have two swimming pools, an international buffet restaurant and several a la carte restaurants all said to be operating below an acceptable standard.
A recent TripAdvisor review states that the hotel was ‘Hugely Disappointing’
and that birds were permitted to fly into the restaurants and help themselves to the food.
Nick Harris, Head of International Travel Law at Simpson Millar LLP says:
“Birds are hazards in food establishments because their droppings may contaminate food
with organisms of the salmonella group and other pathogens. If food is not maintained at appropriate temperatures bacteria will multiply rapidly
to dangerous levels."
“My experienced team of travel lawyers have dealt with claims
at this Hotel Playa Pesquero in the past. Holidaymakers staying at the hotel have been diagnosed with salmonella
, a bug which is often attributed to food poisoning and cross contamination.”Advice:
the tour operator Thomas Cook’s legal team is known to call holidaymakers under the guise of a Welfare team fishing for information. Do not be fooled into accepting compensation worth a fraction of your claims true value by completing a questionnaire which curtails your entitlement to compensation. These questions should not be addressed without taking legal advice.Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992:
If you have travelled on a package holiday deal to the Hotel Playa Pesquero and suffered with an illness bug you may be entitled to claim compensation. This is due to the consumer protection regulations that are in place which protect British Holidaymakers exposed due to the negligence of hoteliers abroad.
