Holiday Compensation Claims rise due to complaints about hotels in the Dominican Republic

Holidays in the Dominican Republic are becoming more and more popular for UK holidaymakers seeking some winter sun. But here at Simpson Millar LLP Holiday Claims Solicitors, we are already handling compensation claims for clients whose Dominican Republic holidays turned to disaster.

In particular we are acting on holiday compensation claims regarding reports of holiday illness including sickness and diarrhoea - thought to be due to food poisoning - from clients who have stayed in the Sirensis Tropical Suites hotel in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. We have already been instructed to take legal action by some 20 clients whose holidays to the Dominican Republic were ruined. And we are expecting many more disappointed holidaymakers to contact us regarding claiming compensation for a ruined holiday in the Dominican Republic after their Christmas and New Year breaks.

In fact, as early as October 2009 visitors to the Sirensis Tropical Suites hotel in Punta Cana were flooding the popular website TripAdvisor with complaints about their holiday in the Dominican Republic. Not surprisingly, many are now claiming compensation for holiday illness and their holiday nightmare.

In October 2009 a large group of adults and children found the Sirensis Tropical Suites’ facilities "extremely poor". They found hotel rooms infested with cockroaches, ants and other insects, complained that the food was "appalling, greasy and stale" and mentioned a lack of hygiene, with flies allegedly resting on buffet dishes throughout the day, increasing the risk of food poisoning – and also increasing the family group’s chance to claim group compensation for their disastrous holiday.

Nine of the group went down with holiday illness including infections thought to have been caught from the dirty hotel swimming pool not to mention sickness from the "appalling" food offered on what should have been a dream, all-inclusive package holiday to the Dominican Republic.

Also in October 2009 another package holiday visitor to the Dominican Republic’s Sirensis Tropical Suites hotel mentioned that the food was "often undercooked and sat around for ages".

"Around 75% of people I spoke to had bad, sometimes extremely bad, guts, me included. "

"On arrival to our room we found three quarters of the lights not working and blood on the walls and on a bedside lampshade. "

"One day we noticed a nasty smell and soon found the water in the shower and sink was running brown. Later that night the bath filled up with raw sewage. When we were moved to another room in the Sirensis Tropical Suites hotel we found that it was infested with fleas. We were glad to get out of there!" Certainly another holiday experience deserving of a compensation claim.

Other problems reported in October and November 2009 at the Sirensis Tropical Suites hotel in the Dominican Republic and perhaps eligible for a holiday compensation claim include faulty air conditioning in hotel rooms, hotel bathrooms with dirty towels and no shower curtains, many complaints of fleas and cockroaches in hotel bedrooms and complaints of bars and restaurants being closed. Many all-inclusive package deal holidaymakers to the Sirensis Tropical Suites hotel felt misled on the additional charges they would face such as expensive drinks not covered by their all inclusive package holiday deal and costs to have a safe in the hotel bedroom.
