Helpline for the Elderly – Silver Line

Dated:

Elderly ManEsther Rantzen, who is known for launching the Childline has now launched a new 24 hour helpline service for the elderly in the Isle of Man.

This is a pilot, but based on her experience, having founded the Childline in 1986, a charity which helps children deal with issues including abuse and bullying, Mrs Rantzen feels that this service will support people of retirement age or over who are living on the island.

She said "I know that those responsible for care of the elderly are well aware of the hugely damaging impact loneliness can have on health and wellbeing, however, there is a stigma attached to loneliness which all too often prevents older people asking for help".

Not surprising Mrs Rantzen appears to have received a very positive response from both the Government and also from local charities. One hopes if this is successful a scheme like this will be launched nationwide (ie June 2013) and will definitely benefit the elderly who often live by themselves and have issues that they are not able to discuss with people close to them.
