Danger of drop-side cots spotted in the USA

It’s been announced that drop-side cots and cribs will be banned from being manufactured or sold in the USA from June 2011. This follows the deaths of at least 32 babies since 2000, all attributed to the design of the cot they were in.

In some cases the cot hadn’t been assembled properly, in others the drop-side rails were faulty and there have also been concerns about ill-fitting mattresses trapping the baby’s body between the cot mattress and cot side.

Drop side cot – beware of dangers

The babies who have died suffered suffocation or strangulation injuries. Since 2007, the US government has issued recall notices on 11 million cots, yet the same has not happened in the UK or Europe.

British-made cots are tested under European safety standards and so far the Trading Standards Institute has not reported any problems with drop-side cots in the UK.

However, we would urge all parents to be aware of the US findings and either avoid having a drop-side cot or be extra vigilant if you already have one for your baby.

We will continue to follow this story and bring you any developments in the coming weeks and months.
