Bugs in the Food or Water? Holiday Illness at Lindos Imperial Resort

We have been instructed by a group of people in relation to holiday illness at the Lindos Imperial Resort & Spa, Rhodes, Greece.

Swimming Pool at Hotel

Although not 100% clear yet, it does seem that these holiday illnesses stem from problems relating to the water supply. Contaminated water supplies can lead to illnesses such as cryptosporidium, and even more worryingly, legionnaires' disease.

What, Where, Why? – Water

According to an online comment, seemingly from the hotel's manager on travel review website Tripadvisor, the hotel runs its own water system. This is because Rhodes is only a small island, and therefore has only a limited supply of drinkable water.

Along with this, the manager apologises to a holidaymaker who complained on Tripadvisor, admitting that there was indeed a water problem during her stay. This confirms that there are recent issues with their internal water supply.

This brings us on to the next holidaymaker who took to the internet to vent their frustration. A family all fell ill on holiday at the resort, reporting sickness, diarrhoea, and a fever.

It seems that holidaymakers are being told by the hotel staff and the holiday rep that it is an airborne virus, whereas a doctor is said to have indicated that it was a bacterial infection from the drinking water.

At the hotel, it seems that unsealed bottled water is being provided, bringing us back to their internal water system. This system is supposed to provide holidaymakers access to "fountains where you can refill your bottles around the resort".

What Could it be?

At this stage, we don't know which specific bacteria is causing the illness. However when it comes to water, there's a few key possibilities.

Contaminated water can lead to any number of holiday illnesses, although the most common bugs are usually Cryptosporidium and Shigella. These commonly caught from contaminated swimming pool or drinking water and fruits and vegetables that have been washed in contaminated water. Perhaps the worst way to catch it is through faeces in swimming pools.

Symptoms include:

  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever

If you have fallen ill at the Lindos Imperial Resort & Spa, or any other resort as the result of contaminated water, you may be able to claim compensation for your ruined holiday.
