Breach and Fines

The owner, Mr J. Hannaway, has been given an £11,660 fine and handed a £7,000 bill for costs for breaching Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act, after he gave the go-ahead on refurbishments that began in 2010 - without carrying out the proper prior checks for asbestos.

In October 2012, Mr Hannaway allowed 30 workers to proceed with the removal of debris over the course of two days.

Though it is yet to be seen if any of the workers have had any negative effects, if exposure has occurred and the workers are diagnosed with an asbestos related disease such as asbestosis or mesothelioma, they could be able to claim compensation.
