What Happened in the Data Breach?

According to co-founder, Karin Sode, hackers stole an entire database containing personal information on previous customers.

This included:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Phone numbers
  • Tariff IDs
  • Energy meter IDs

15 small businesses customers also had their bank details accessed, including their account number and sort code. But as far as we know, no other financial information was stolen in the data breach.

In response to the breach, People’s Energy called in independent experts to try and identify the hackers.

What was the Effect of the Data Breach?

Fortunately, most customers won’t face a direct financial risk if their bank details haven’t been exposed, but the data breach could still make them vulnerable to phishing attempts. Phishing is where cyber criminals pose as an official source, such as a bank, to try and gather valuable personal information.

While scammers can be quite convincing, some telltale signs of phishing include spelling mistakes and unusual looking web addresses. If you’re ever unsure, don’t click on any links or attachments, and remember that your bank will never ask for your bank details over email or phone.

To protect your personal data, we recommend:

  • Regularly updating your passwords on your online accounts, making sure that you choose strong combinations and use different passwords on different accounts
  • Reporting any suspicious activity on your bank statements straight away
  • Updating your antivirus software and apps to make sure you’ve got the best security features in place
