Homeowners Get Second Chance to Claim for Cavity Wall Installation
14 September 2020
Dozens of homeowners across the England and Wales who were ‘let down’ by their legal advisors while pursuing damages for poorly installed cavity wall insulation are being given a ‘second chance’ to make a claim for compensation.
While the insulation – which is injected into the cavity between the exterior brick wall and interior wall – is supposed to make homes warmer and cut energy bills, badly installed products, or products installed in unsuitable properties, can lead to damp and mould which can have a detrimental effect on people's health.
It can also cause the devaluation of a property, making it more difficult to sell at market value. In many cases homeowners have also been left facing significant costs to have the work corrected.
In such cases homeowners can claim for damages and losses, but a recent investigation carried out by law firm Simpson Millar has revealed that dozens of people had their cases abandoned without explanation.
The firm’s Professional Negligence Solicitors are now urging anybody who had their case dropped or mishandled to come forward, as they may still be eligible for compensation.
Robert Godfrey, Head of Professional Negligence at Simpson Millar commented, “It’s disappointing to see that so many of the legal investigations into cavity wall installations have been mishandled and not followed through correctly.
“Shoddy insulation can be a health risk, and, in some cases, homeowners will have seen a decrease in the valuation of their property or left to cover the cost of expensive remedial work.
“That’s simply unacceptable, and if an individual has had their claim against the cavity wall insulation company dropped without rhyme or reason, they may still be able to action.
“With the UK Government’s latest energy efficiency scheme, The Green Homes Grant, launching in England this month, it’s even more important than ever that consumers know that they are protected.”
