The Medical Disability Society in a report to the Management of Traumatic Brain Injury (February 1988) defined traumatic brain injury as a "brain injury caused by a trauma to the head (including the effects upon the brain or other possible complications of injury, notably hypoxemia and hypertension and intracerebral haematoma)".


Who is most at risk of sustaining a brain injury?


  • Anyone is at risk of sustaining a brain injury. However, statistics show that males are more than twice as likely as females to sustain a brain injury.
  • Traumatic brain injury is the largest cause of disability in young males in Europe (Langlois 2006)
  • The average age of a person sustaining a traumatic brain injury is 26.
  • Persons who have already suffered a brain injury have an increased risk of sustaining further brain injury.
