Sickness / illness in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is sadly one of the hotspots for holiday illness, with
the most common illnesses being:
(NB: This is a non exhaustive list of bacterial infections with the sole purpose
of highlighting some of more common causes of sickness and illness claims that we
deal with, which are often a direct result of food poisoning)
See "Hotel-Watch"
to find out which hotels we are currently receiving enquiries about holiday illness.
Holiday Illness Outbreak - Our Holiday Claims Solicitors are currently helpling 20 holiday makers to claim
compensation after an outbreak of sickness at a hotel in the Dominican Republic.
Each client contracted gastroenteritis because of poor food handling practices and unsanitary hygiene conditions.
Food was served cold and left exposed to birds and insects. The claim is at an advanced stage and given the strength of the
holiday makers
group action claim it is expected that an out of court settlement will be reached with the tour operator.
Health problems - symptoms and signs of food poisoning
The most common symptoms of food poisoning are usually vomiting and diarrhoea
but you should be aware that it can in some cases result in more severe secondary
conditions ie chronic fatigue syndrome, reactive arthritis and
irritable bowel syndrome.
Salmonella Food Poisoning - Following a holiday at an all-inclusive hotel in the Dominican Republic Mr H was
diagnosed with Salmonella - a food borne infection linked to the consumption of contaminated food and poor hygiene standards. Simpson Millar's specialist lawyers are currently making a substantial holiday compensation
claim against his tour operator.
Accidents in the Dominican Republic
Accidents on holiday
are unfortunately a fact of life, listed below are some of the most widespread types
we see whilst people are abroad:
- Slips in restaurants
- Slipping due to wet stairs or steps
- Slips and trips on damaged floor tiles
- Motor vehicle crashes eg coaches, cars and motorcycles
Accident Abroad - Whilst on holiday in the Dominican Republic, Miss P slipped and fell on a piece of cake. She sustained nasty injuries to both her knees. The cake had been dropped on the floor in the hotel bar and had remained a hazard for sometime. Our Holiday Accident Solicitors are pursuing a personal injury claim against her tour operator with a view to obtaining substantial compensation due to the severity of her injuries.
